Travelling with a dog, cat or ferret? European rules changed on 22 April 2026. For a non-commercial trip with no more than five animals, DGAV requires a microchip, Pet Animal Passport and valid rabies vaccination. There is a 21-day wait after the first rabies vaccination, and vaccination cannot pre-date identification. If an authorised person accompanies the pet, the journey must be within five days before or after the owner's trip.
If you live in Portugal, check SIAC too. Dogs, cats and ferrets need a microchip and registration. Animals born after 25 October 2019 must be registered within 120 days of birth. A pet arriving from another country also needs registration if it will remain for 120 days or longer. Carry the DIAC document or passport on domestic journeys.
Mafra's municipal service is CROAMM. Its published opening hours are Monday to Friday, 08:30 to 16:30. Vaccination, microchipping, veterinary guidance and adoptions are listed for Tuesday and Thursday, 14:30 to 16:00. The schedule is reviewed every year, so call before travelling: 219 669 400 or 219 669 405.
Found an abandoned or injured animal on a road? Mafra municipality directs residents to the GNR/NPA on 213 252 650 or ct.lsb.dmfr.npa@gnr.pt. Give the location and do not put yourself at risk. If no owner is found, collection is directed to CROAMM. Call 112 if a person faces immediate danger.
